Byleth Eisner, Fire Emblem’s Wandering Flame & Proven Professor

Yuji Sakai, Shakugan no Shana’s Mystes of the Midnight Lost Child & World-Wandering Ascetic

In times of conflict, many lives can be lost, but there will always be those who will fight for the peace at the end of it all. And sometimes, you can find yourself gaining an incredible power that can give you the power to decide the future of all conflict, even if that power can be inside of you all along. Be it a dragon’s heart that was put into you to ensure your life as a newborn, or a mechanism that allows you to persist after the end of your existence, they can allow you to meet gods. So between these two whose paths have converged... whose answer will burn the brightest, and who will exist another day?

Before we Start…

As Three Houses and Hopes allows for a wide variety of Classes that Byleth can take on, I’ll be limiting Byleth to their classes that they have as part of the story (or are part of their class tree in Three Hopes, meaning Byleth will only be given abilities from the Commoner, Silverheart, Swordmaster, and Enlightened One classes).

Backgrounds

Byleth Eisner

“It’s time to start anew.”

Have you ever had a dream that showed a huge battle? Well, that’s what Byleth Eisner had before they went with their father on a job that would change them forever. That job had them taking on bandits… and wind up defending the future rulers of the three nations that make up Fodlan. Afterwards, they and their father, out of gratitude by the Knights of Seiros (who arrived right when the leader of the bandits were defeated), were invited to Garreg Mach Monestary; where the Church of Seiros, the central power of the Continent, resided. Byleth was greeted by the Archbishop of the Church, Rhea, and she offered Byleth a new job teaching one of the classes of a nation represented at the Monastery’s Officer’s Academy, be it Adrestia’s Black Eagles, Farghus’ Blue Lions, or Leicester’s Golden Deer.

What class Byleth chose, for what it’s worth, would have an impact on the world at large, but until then, things were mostly consistent for the next year or so. One assignment they had to do with their class was to guard the resting place from bandits, and there Byleth obtained a sword that once belonged to the King of Liberation himself. On occasion they encountered the mysterious masked terrorist known as the Flame Emperor, a person who wanted to change the foundations of the world. And as the days went by, they learned of a threat to Fodlan that no one was aware of, and they were able to infiltrate the Church itself. Regardless of whatever the assignment was, Byleth and their class were able to complete it without any issues… until the end of the year, where at the end of an assignment that Byleth did alongside the Knights of Seiros, they bore witness to a student killing their father with their own hands. One thing was certain after that fateful day:  Even turning back the clock can’t always save the ones that they loved.

Needless to say, finding themselves powerless to stop their dad from dying did quite a bit on them, though it didn’t really affect their abilities in the slightest. Though on the other hand, Byleth was consumed by vengeance, setting off immediately after their father’s murderer once they learned of their locations. Unaware that it was a trap set by a superior of one of the evil shadow people, Solon, who immediately killed the killer to trap Byleth in what’s basically the Shadow Realm. Faced with no other option, Sothis decided to fuse her own will with Byleth’s, giving them the power to escape the darkness… and the power itself was none other than the progenitor god themselves. Shortly afterwards, Rhea decided to take Byleth and their class to the secret tomb underneath Garreg Mach, in hopes of awakening the progenitor god, unaware that what she was about to do would not work. Though soon afterwards, the Flame Emperor attacked the tomb, and soon afterwards… they were revealed to be Edelgard, who after the battle declared war on the church (whether or not Byleth sides with her or not depends on your choices). In the resulting battle for Garreg Mach, and what was the first battle of the war ended with Byleth falling to their doom…

After lying in a ditch comatose for 5 years, what they exactly did differs depending on the routes, in all routes in which Byleth sides with the Church (that is, every route EXCEPT Crimson Flower), they usually all had the same result, reuniting with the leader of the house their class was of, fighting against the Adrestian Empire in hopes of ending the war that Edelgard started, and end up uniting the entire continent in the process. Something similar happens in the Crimson Flower route… but things are a bit different beyond Byleth having sided with the Empire over the Church, as the results of the final battle there resulted in them losing their god powers altogether. Regardless of them siding with the Empire, trying to save Dimitri from the hell he crawled himself into, helping Claude end racism, or even becoming a fourth (fifth technically) party in stopping Edelgard, Byleth united the people of Fodlan to forge a new future… and give EVERYONE something to believe in.

Yuji Sakai

“I was lying to myself, I don’t want to leave. I was only telling myself what I want to hear.”

Life was normal for Yuji Sakai, dad’s constantly away for work, has normal friends, and is about to start junior high. The moment after hanging out with a female schoolmate with an interest in his best friend, however, things started to take a turn, as it appeared that time froze and everyone became monochrome except for him… and a giant baby showed up, intent on killing him… until a red-haired girl came in and saved him, then the truth became apparent: He had died, and had became a torch, something that is the final embers of someone who existed, a special type of Torch known as a Mystes at that. After the girl and her talking amulet (who’s also god) talked to him about the truth of the world, and spending some final moments with said schoolmate (who died in the attack caused by said giant baby and became a torch about to peter out), he talked to the girl, giving her a name, and the two seemingly parted…

Until the next day at school where he learned that said girl took the existence of said Schoolmate into her own, becoming integrated into his life. Shana (as she was now called beyond the Schoolgirl’s name, Yukari Hirai) mainly did this just so she can sus out the Crimson Lord lying in Misaki City, who rather conveniently appeared while the two were at school. Offering his own existence to prevent another classmate’s existence from being used up, it seemed like it was the end of Yuji Sakai… though as it turned out, his existence flared back to what it was like 24 hours before when it hit midnight. Only through defeating the Crimson Lord lurking in Misaki City, Friagne the Hunter, would it be apparent about what Treasure Tool was inside of him: The Midnight Lost Child. Little did both know that their battles would only get more and more intense as an organization run by Crimson Denizens, Bal Masque, would become aware of the Midnight Lost Child inside of Yuji, and would do schemes to obtain the Treasure Tool’s power…

Having a huge target on his back wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience, to say the least, and it wasn’t just Bal Masque that wanted the Midnight Lost Child. As it turned out one of the two people who made the Treasure, Pheles, wanted it so she had a chance to see her lover again… though those plans were nixed when it turned out she herself got mixed up in another one of Bal Masque’s plans. Through the days that passed and the battles that had intensified, Yuji gradually became more and more capable of fighting, resulting in him being able to defeat a weaker Crimson Denizen to help out Shana and allies, and being the one who was able to figure out the whole deal behind Sabrac, an infamous Crimson Denizen mercenary hired by Bal Masque. Though at the same time, his feelings for Shana grew greater and greater, and his desire to see her free from the endless war between Flame Haze and Crimson Lord as well, though it also had a growing interest in him wanting to free Shana from the endless conflict. Ultimately this resulted when on Christmas Eve, he suddenly vanished in front of Shana’s eyes…

…Though he was saved by a mysterious figure. That figure was none other than the Snake of the Festival, the god of creation that was banished millennia ago. Their goals aligned, they formed a contract that isn’t much different than a Flame Haze (no vessel though, the Snake speaks through Yuji), and Yuji became the leader of Bal Masque, determined to bring peace to the universe. Though while the way there was mired with conflict, he and the Snake of the Festival were able to bring back the Snake’s body so they can create a new world, built with a compromise put in place by the Flame Hazes, who noticed that the plan was basically perfect in every way, to the point where some Flame Hazes lost the will to fight when said plan was unveiled at first. And while he intended himself to be by himself in this new world, one last fight with Shana leading to him losing ensured that no matter what, he wasn’t going to be alone in the world.

Experience

Byleth

Thanks to them having been a mercenary under the employ of their father since they were a kid, they have a few years of experience fighting (When and how long exactly Byleth served as a mercenary is unknown), being capable of wiping out entire Mercenary companies in a matter of minutes.

Yuji

Yuji, in comparison to Byleth, has much less experience to his skills, only really becoming a fighter late into season 2 of the anime. Though after he entered his contract with the Snake of the Festival, he has shown himself that he can be three steps ahead against Flame Hazes that have centuries of experience on his hands.

Arsenal & Allies

Byleth

Sword of the Creator

Doesn’t have an alternate form that’s a bow.

Byleth’s main sword, which originally belonged to the “King of Liberation” Nemesis. In the modern day they’re the only one capable of using it due to its Crest Stone being removed. This doubles as a whip sword, allowing Byleth to strike at foes farther away and letting them counterattack foes from a distance. When Byleth fuses with Sothis, this becomes known as the Sublime Creator Sword.

Knight-Captain’s Sword

A sword that originally belonged to Jeralt when he was in the Knights of Seiros, which increases Byleth’s power when they’re at 25% or higher health and restores damage dealt to them by 7 HP each turn. Byleth only has this in the Three Hopes timelines.

Seiros Shield

Rhea’s shield that she entrusts to Byleth in the routes that they side with her after Edelgard reveals herself as the Flame Emperor. This restores 12% of Byleth’s health every turn and halves the power of monster attacks when they strike Byleth.

Crest of Flames Stone

The crest stone of the Crest of Flames, imbedded into Byleth at birth by Rhea on request of their late mother to act as their heart when it was apparent that their heart wasn’t beating. This allows them access to the Crest of Flame’s abilities, which beyond gaining access to Sothis’ powers (more on that later) also allows them:

·        A 1/5 chance of restoring HP relative to 3/10 of the damage they deal

·        Strengthening attacks, and making their foes incapable of counterattacking

·        Usage of the Sword of the Creator

In the Crimson Flower Route, they lose this after Rhea’s death, as damage they attained during the final battle makes the stone disappear, though they gain an actual heart in the process. Though in truth, this was actually Sothis’ own heart, it and the bones of her corpse being made to make the Sword of the Creator.

Chalice of Beginnings

Consume the Chalice, Aelfric

A chalice that has the power to potentially bring back the dead and was used by Aelfric in a futile attempt at bringing back Byleth’s mother, only for him to turn into a monster. Outside of Cindered Shadows, Byleth gets this mailed to them in a new game if Cindered Shadows was cleared, and it allows them to counterattack regardless of range the opponent is at (Beyond real long-reaching attacks such as Bolting.)

Other Swords

Pictured: A Silver Sword, one of the strongest basic weapons Byleth can wield.

Swords other than the Sword of the Creator that Byleth can wield

The Training Sword, Iron Sword, Steel Sword, Silver Sword, Mercurius, and the Sword of Zoltan, which are all swords of varying power that don’t offer any extra effects

The Brave Sword, which allows Byleth to strike at opponents twice in a row.

The Levin Sword, which allows Byleth to attack using their magic, and allows them an alternate ranged attack by calling forth a thunderbolt.

The Devil Sword, which damages Byleth by 10 HP after usage, and the Cursed Ashiya Sword, which damages them by 5 HP after usage.

The Venin Edge, which can poison the opponent.

The Killing Edge and the Wo Dao, which offer a higher critical hit rate than other blades.

The Armorslayer and the Rapier, which deal extra effectiveness to armored units (and in the Rapier’s case, Horse units as well)

Other Shields

Byleth wearing the Maid Outfit is a VA reference, de arimasu.

Other shields that Byleth can obtain that have a variety of different effects beyond raising their physical defenses.

The Leather Shield, Iron Shield, Steel Shield, and Silver Shield are all simply shields that raise Byleth’s physical defenses with no other side effects.

The Talisman Shield raises some of Byleth’s magical defenses, with the Hexlock Shield being an improved form of that.

The Aurora Shield, which negates any extra effectiveness Byleth will take damage from if they’re flying, the Lampos Shield does something similar but while they’re on a horse, and the Kadmos Shield is the same but if Byleth is heavily armored.

Gauntlets

As one of the specialties of the Enlightened One class is Brawling, Byleth can equip various gauntlets to aid them in simply throwing hands with the enemy. All hit twice in a row.

Similar to the swords, the Training Gauntlets, Iron Gauntlets, Steel Gauntlets, and Silver Gauntlets are all basic weapons, having increasingly higher power.

The Killer Knuckles have a higher critical rate than other Gauntlets.

The Aura Knuckles allow Byleth to attack the foe using their magic over their physical attack.

The Dragon Claws allow Byleth extra damage against Draconic enemies, and the Wolf Fangs allow Byleth extra damage against Horse-mounted Enemies.

Elixirs

A set of 5 items that Byleth can consume to restore their health points completely

Sothis

There are two ways of escaping the Abyss. Fusing, or joining Smash.

Fortune’s Weave may or may not bring a third method.

A mysterious girl that sits on a throne in Byleth’s mind, who is in truth the progenitor god of the Church of Seiros (& Rhea’s mother). She gives Byleth the power over time, which gets enhanced once she merges with them. While originally thought to have ceased to be when she merged by Byleth, it’s more that she’s just letting Byleth take the wheel full-time, as she’s able to return whenever. She’s also capable of taking over Byleth, being able to speak through them and changing their hair into their Awakened state’s hair.

Yuji

Midnight Lost Child

A treasure tool that was created by the human known as Johan so the Crimson Lord Pheles wouldn’t need to eat the existence of others (They were in love), which was transferred to Yuji as a result of the Crimson Lord Sabrac attacking the two. How this works exactly is that at the stroke of midnight, it instantly replenishes any Power of Existence that was lost during the day, which gives Yuji a unique existence compared to other Torches.

It also allows him to move freely inside a sealed off area.

Blutsauger

Big ass sword

A sword treasure tool that was once held by Sorath, a Crimson Denizen in love with his sister Tiriel (the two are known as the Incest Aizen siblings btw), Blutsauger allows Yuji to instantly harm whoever is hitting the sword as long as he puts in some of his existence in it, bypassing their defenses, though he’s never shown to use this function of Blutsauger.

Azure

This bad boy gives him Flash Fire.

A ring that Yuji obtains from slicing some of Friagne’s fingers off, which has the ability to absorb just about ANY fire-based attack that can hit him. At the end of the series, it gains a modification that allowed Yuji to regain his full existence and not live as a torch, triggered when Yuji and Shana had a kiss.

Power of Existence

Pictured: Shana with the last ember of Yukari Hirai’s Power of Existence.

An energy source that calls upon Yuji’s own existence, which he needs to exist (duh.). As a Torch, any flame that he hires at his enemies use up a small bit of his existence. He can also use his existence to have a Flame Haze fix up damage done to an area where a battle has taken place. It isn’t much of an issue to him due to the Midnight Lost Child’s adforementioned PoE Regeneration. After regaining a full existence, he is (seemingly) able to use his powers without having to draw on his own existence.

Silver

In the midst of slaughtering a Crimson Denizen, the Flames of Disaster show themselves

An infamous Crimson Denizen who becomes bound to the Midnight Lost Child sometime before the events of the series. Yuji can use its power to fight, being able to use it in conjunction with the Power of Creation to make various constructs made of Silver to protect him and trap his foes.

Tyrant

A giant suit of armor (technically 2 suits of armor) that were created by Bal Masque in hopes of giving a body for their leader to inhabit while he was in an interdimensional prison. As a result of Sabrac’s attack on the previous wielder of the Midnight Lost Child, it was put into the Midnight Lost Child. Yuji became aware of the Tyrant when he successfully casted a seal for the first time, and the true form of the Silver. He can summon a wide variety of them by using the power of the Silver, and presumably they like the Tyrant in the series lore are capable of instantly taking the existence of his foes.

Bakuyagai

A treasure tool that takes the form of an armor that Yuji mainly wears in his fused form with the Snake of the Festival, which protects him a bit while also giving him some flight capabilities. He still has this after splitting from the Snake of the Festival

Dragon Tail

May or may not force the opponent to switch out their Pokémon.

A treasure tool that takes the appearance of a scarf that he wears during the winter and an extension of his hair while in Snake mode (and apparently during the summer, it's a tie). He can use this as a sort of whip-like weapon that he can defend with, and can use it to cleave an opening for buildings and the like. For a while after the final battle, he’s unable to use this, but eventually manages to get it working again sometime after he arrived in Xanadu.

Snake of the Festival

Greatest Desire: Ending Racism

One of the Gods of the Crimson World, and the one whose opposite to the Crimson Lord that Shana is contracted to, representing Creation in comparison to Alastor’s destruction. According to the Light Novels, he’s been in contact with Yuji since the events of the Season 1 Finale, which was excised from the Anime. He upon fusing with Yuji, gave the latter a good deal of powers that Yuji had instant mastery over. At the end of the story, after Xanadu has been created, they split apart, though Yuji had some sort of powers leftover from the fight.

Abilities

Byleth

Divine Pulse

“My stand is The World, you see.”

An ability inherent to Sothis that she gives Byleth after they died against Kostas, which allows them some time related abilities, such as:

·        Rewinding time so they can change the outcomes of actions

·        Stopping time entirely for a few seconds

It should be noted that if Byleth uses Divine Pulse to turn back the clock, it appears they’re unable to move, though they can move normally if its time stop function is used.

Divine Caprice

An ability that Sothis has in Three Hopes, which Byleth should be able to use considering they have Sothis’ power. With this, Byleth gains a barrier around them while magic circles appear above them, which periodically fire off magical orbs.

Flight

In big red caps: NO FEH SCALING, THIS IS JUST THE ONLY REAL VISUAL

Byleth, as Sothis’ vessel, should have some sort of levitation ability that can let them be above the ground, though they aren’t shown to directly have this power in the Fodlan games themselves.

Sothis Shield

Sothis to Sothis communication

An amiibo-exclusive ability that Byleth has if they access the Holy Tomb after using any Fire Emblem amiibo during New Game+, which allows Byleth to bestow upon anyone increased resistance.

Ruptured Heaven

The combat art that is unique to the Sword of the Creator, Ruptured Heaven (Or Ruptured Sky if you’re playing FEH) has Byleth use the SotC’s whip functionalities to their full potential, also adding 30% of their Magic Power to their physical power of this attack. After the SotC gets upgraded to the Sublime Creator Sword, this is upgraded to Sublime Heaven. It also gives them an increased critical rate.

Black Magic

Various spells that Byleth can learn by raising their Reason level. They can also use Black Magic to imbue whatever sword they wield with either fire or electric magic.

Fire, which has Byleth launch a fireball at the opponent

Thunder, where Byleth calls upon a thunderbolt at the opponent

Bolgalone, a higher level fire spell than Fire.

And Ragnarok, where Byleth engulfs the enemy and the surrounding area with the strongest Flame spell known.

White Magic

Various spells that Byleth can learn by raising their Faith level

Heal and Recover, which can restore the health of an allied unit

Nosferatu, which allows Byleth to restore health equal to half the damage they deal to the enemy

And Aura, where Byleth attacks the opponent with Rings of Light.

Other Combat Arts

Wrath Strike, a basic sword combat art that has Byleth land a stronger blow than they would’ve done in a normal strike

Grounder, a sword combat art that is stronger against flying enemies

Bane of Monsters, a sword combat art that is stronger against monsters

Windsweep, a sword combat art that makes it so the enemies is unable to counterattack against this attack

Fading Blow, a Brawling combat art that has Byleth go back a space after attacking

Rushing Blow, a Brawling combat art that allows Byleth to go behind their opponent.

Draining Blow, a Brawling combat art that allows Byleth to restore their HP equal to half of the damage they deal to the enemy

Healing Focus, a Brawling combat art that allows Byleth to heal up half of their health.

Mystic Blow, a Brawling Combat art that allows Byleth to attack using their magic instead of their physical attack.

Professor’s Guidance

Byleth’s personal skill, which increases their experience gain by x1.2, and when they fuse with Sothis, it upgrades to Professor’s Guidance+,  which allows them to add an extra 2 to the damage they deal.

Sacred Power

Byleth’s skill when they master the Enlightened One class, which increases damage dealt by +3 and reduces damage taken by -3.

Skill Abilities

Model Leader and Sacred Power share an icon. I’m not listing Sacred Power twice here.

A wide, wide variety of abilities that Byleth can learn as they increase their proficiency in the skills alongside Combat Arts and Magic.

Sword Prowess is a skill that has different levels, which the highest of which allows them to increase their accuracy by 10, evasion by 20, and a lowered chance of being hit by criticals by 10 while they’re equipped with a sword.

Axebreaker is a skill that increases both their accuracy and evasion by 30 when up against axe-users.

Sword Crit +10 is a skill that increases their chances of getting a critical hit by 10 when they’re wielding a sword.

Swordfaire is a skill Byleth gains upon mastering their Sword skill, which increases the power of all sword attacks by +5.

Reason is a skill that similar to other weapon type-based skills, is more effective the higher level it is at, increasing Byleth’s accuracy by 10, evasion by 20, and lowers the chance of them being hit by a critical hit by 10 while any Black Magic is equipped.

Black Magic Range +1 is a skill that increases the range that Byleth can hit opponents with Black Magic by 1

Black Tomefaire is a skill that Byleth gains upon mastering Reason, which increases the power of their black magic by +5.

White Magic Avo +20, an ability Byleth gains by realizing their budding talent in Faith, which increases their dodge rate of any white magic by +20.

Faith is a skill that similar to other weapon type-based skills, is more effective the higher level it is at, increasing Byleth’s accuracy by 10, evasion by 20, and lowers the chance of them being hit by a critical hit by 10 when using White Magic.

White Magic Range +1 is a White Magic version of Black Magic Range +1

White Tomefaire is a skill that Byleth gains upon mastering Faith, which increases the power of their white magic by +5.

Brawling Prowess is similar to the other Prowess skills, which activates when Byleth is using Gauntlets.

Brawl Crit +10 is a skill that raises the rate Byleth can land a crit while throwing hands by +10.

Fistfaire is the Faire skill for Gauntlets, which increases the power of them by +5

Authority is a skill that is level based, and at its highest level, increases the might of Battalions by +10

Battalion Vantage is an ability that when Byleth’s current Battalion is at a third of endurance, ensures it always moves first.

Model Leader is a skill that doubles the experience of any Battalion under Byleth.

Defensive Tactics is a skill that halves the damage Battalions take.

Battalion Desperation is a skill that when Byleth’s current Battalion is at a third of endurance, makes it so any follow-up attacks happen right after the first attack.

Rally Movement is a skill that allows Byleth to raise the movement of any ally by 1 for a single turn.

Offensive Tactics is a skill that increases their power by 20% if they have a Battalion equipped alongside increasing said Army’s might by 5 and accuracy by 20.

Sacrosanct

Sothis has put up an AT Field. There is nothing you can do.

An ability that is similar to Divine Caprice in that while it’s exclusive to Sothis in Three Hopes, Byleth in theory can have access to this ability. With this, if they perform a Perfect Guard, Dodge, or Air Dodge, they can nullify any damage

Warrior Specials

Special attacks that Byleth and Sothis can pull off in Three Hopes, which Byleth should be capable of pulling of the latter’s one, due to them having her power.

Byleth’s Warrior Special is a strike that has Byleth slicing at their foes several times, before launching multiple fireballs at them, and when they’re in their Enlightened One class, imbues their sword with enough magic to make it much larger than they are to slash downwards at their opponent.

Sothis’ Warrior Special involves her summoning a flame, then calling forth the Sword of the Creator to slash at the area, which then causes a magical eruption to sprout from where the slashes landed.

Awakening

Otherwise known as the state Dimitri was in during the last leg of his fight with Guts

An ability that Byleth can only use in Three Hopes, where they gain a blue aura around them that powers them up.

Other Abilities

Ashen Demon, which allows them to make their attacks stronger while in their Awakened state

Unfeeling Blade, which increases Byleth’s power by 30% if they are ordered to attack a unit

Mage Knight’s Ploy, which allows Byleth to power up their magic attacks while also increasing the chances of them landing a status effect.

Hand of Time, which like Divine Caprice and Sacrosant, is an ability exclusive to Sothis that Byleth should have access to as they have Sothis’ power, which allows their defenses to increase by 30% if they are ordered to defend a person

Yuji

Torch Physiology

Don’t worry, he’ll be fine (this is the first episode)

Yuji’s state for most of Shakugan no Shana is that of a Torch, a being who was formed from whatever remaining existence someone whose existence was consumed by a Crimson Denizen has when they’re reformed following a Flame Haze restoring an area that was a battle between it and said Crimson Denizen.

This gives him a bit of a recover ability as he can recover from damage he takes from what is seen here, though it requires someone else having to put him back together.

Seal Casting

“This time-space will be dyed red!” no Momotaros, he dyed the time-space black.

The effective Time Stop ability shared between all Unrestricted Spell users in the modern age, which is an Area of Effect spell that brings forth the Crimson Realm into the surrounding area, lifting it from casualty in the process. When sharing a body with the Snake of the Festival, the seal’s color turns from red to black.

Flight

An ability universal to Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizens alike that Yuji gains upon his merging with the Snake of the Festival

Fire Manipulation

As with everyone else who can use powers in the Crimson Realm, Yuji can create flames that he can use to attack enemies that are called Endan. The first few times he used them while he was bound to the Tyrant, his flames were Silver in color, though after fusing with the Snake of the Festival they became black in color (and in the anime for the Final, FINAL Battle, they became blue.).

Wind Manipulation

You know I actually debated myself a bit on whether or not it's actually wind.
Figured that it is wind since his fire looks pretty different.

He has the ability to create whirlwinds that he mainly uses for transport reasons, which may or may not be a part of his Endan while merged with the Snake of the Festival

Creation Powers

Pictured: After making the Divine Gate, Yuji and the Snake affirm their desire to become “Racism Enders No. 1”

An ability that Yuji gains when he merged with the SotF, where he can use black flames in order to create a gate to the Abyss, alongside a similar one where he can use the Silver flames of the Tyrant to create things such as a silver orb that can trap his foes, which inside can summon as many Tyrants as possible.

Keeper

A barrier unrestricted spell that’s supposed to protect the Midnight Lost Child from being taken from Yuji, which was put in place by the one of the creators of the Midnight Lost Child, Pheles, to protect the original user of it. Yuji’s version of it can absorb the existence of Crimson Denizens that try to take it.

Grammatica

Yes Yuji, you too have an AT Field. Among other things.

Grammatica is Yuji’s own unrestricted spell that he gains in the final battle of the series, formed by his own training under Shana to fight against the Crimson World, which has at least these following functions:

·        Creating a barrier that can protect him from attacks

·        Amplifying his voice so it can reach large distances away

·        A Teleportation ability, though the exact distance he can transport to at most is unknown

·        An ability to analyze and promptly dismantle combination Unrestricted Spells

Saiki Reisō

“Well boys we did it. Racism is no more.”

A technique that allows Yuji to call forth the Snake of the Festival’s body in order to create anything that is desired, though it requires a Crimson Denizen to be sacrificed and a large amount of Existence if Yuji desires to use it to his full potential.

Forms

Byleth

Enlightened One

Believe in the Byleth that Believes in You. Even if they’re handing your ass to you.

When Byleth was taken to the Abyss known as Zahras, Sothis decided to merge with them in order to escape the darkness, which causes their hair and eyes to become light green and powering them up. In the Routes where Byleth sides with the Church, this is a permanent upgrade, though in Crimson Flower, they lose this upon defeating Rhea. They also achieve this form in Three Hopes once Sothis awakens inside of them, and is a permanent upgrade there as well.

Yuji

Snake of the Festival

“Believe in me, then you won’t need to suffer for anything no more!”

A Form that Yuji can take once he’s merged with the Snake of the Festival, and more or less becomes his default form for the duration of Season 3 (though he’s capable of turning back into his normal self, mostly the two times he visited Misaki City in the season). Presumably he loses access to the form following the creation of Xanadu and the subsequent split from the Snake of the Festival, though he is still seemingly capable of using the same powers he showcases in this form.

Power & Durability

Byleth

·        Capable of soloing entire armies by themselves, and in the timelines of Three Hopes, can be more than a match for any of their students pre-Sothis Awakening

·        Said to be capable of cleaving an entire mountain in two with the Sword of the Creator

·       Broke out of the Shadow Realm that is Zahras right after fully gaining Sothis’ power

·        Should be comparable to Rhea, who was capable of (barely) surviving a Javelin of Light

·        Should be superior to the House Leaders post-Timeskip

·        Sothis’ power is supposedly capable of flooding the entire planet

·        Defeated Dimitri, Claude, and Edelgard, even being capable of defeating Hegemon Edelgard, a monstrous form of Edelgard she took at the end of Azure Moon.

Yuji

·        Capable of surviving the epicenter of the Tenpajyosei with Azure

·        Endured a blast from Margery that burned holes into a bridge

·        Defeated End of Season 2 Shana, who was able toset an entire section of Misaki City on fire with a single attack to take down Sabrac, and should be on par with end of series Shana, who is at least more than 10,000 times stronger than that

·        Superior to Ribesal, who was able to go toe totoe with Eastedge, who can create a starry sky inside a seal and call down flaming meteorsfrom it

·        Snake of the Festival’s reawakening caused Earthquake-like vibrations that were felt by Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizens across the Earth (See Before the Verdict)

·        With the powers of the wishes of the Crimson Denizens, the Snake of the Festival was capable of creating Xanadu, an entire parallel universe

Speed

Byleth

·        Can dodge spells such as Meteor, which can summon meteors that move at Mach 66

·        Able to dodge Hegemon Edelgard’s fireballs spawned from Crest of Flame’s Powers

·        Faster via Divine Pulse’s time stop

Yuji

·        Should be Superior to End of Season 2 Shana, whowas capable of dodging multiple beams from Hecate’s Aster attack, which is described as using Light to attack its foes

·        Capable of appearing like he teleported in front of Shana while she was reaching the World Egg (this was before he activated Grammatica)

·        Effortlessly dodged an incoming attack from Sydonay’s spear, Shintetsu Nyoi, with little advance notice

·        Faster via Grammatica and Seals

Weaknesses

Byleth

The Face of failing to catch a Fish

While Byleth has shown to be a formidable fighter, they do have one drawback, in that Divine Pulse can’t always change the immediate past (Notably, if an attack that misses is attempted to be redone via Divine Pulse, it will still miss), and the Time Reversal function of it is limited, being able to reverse time up to 13 times in a single battle.

Yuji

Despite everything that he has, he still is reliant on the Midnight Lost Child for maintaining his existence for most of the series, so if he runs out of Existence before the clock hits midnight, it’s game over for him. He loses this weakness at the end of the series thanks to Azure’s second function being to give something a full existence being activated.

He also had admitted that he isn’t exactly good with speaking to women

Before the Verdict

Can Byleth fly?

This was honestly a bit of a complicated matter for me to actually determine if they can actually do it, so I tried my best to try to find evidence of Byleth being capable of some sort of Levitation ability.

·        In FEH, the Brave Heroes version of Female Byleth is a Flying Unit, and does it without the need for a Pegasus or a Wyvern (It’s also indicated by Dialogue that Byleth has already become the Enlightened One in the alt)

·        Sothis’ default class in Three Hopes is that of the Gremory, a class whose travel animations shows them flying

·        Likewise, in lieu of actually having a Dragon Form, the Three Houses versions of Sothis (assuming we get Sothis' actual dragon form in Fortune's Weave) levitate in the air in FEH

·        Byleth’s Smash Trailer shows Male Byleth flying after escaping Zahras with the power of joining Smash, and when Female Byleth is revealed, she is flying out of the completed Smash Ball that made up their escape from Zahras

I believe that it stands to reason that yes, Byleth should have some variation of flight.

The Mistquake

This is kinda a hassle to fully explain, but during the Snake of the Festival’s revival of his body he is destroying the Path of Pilgrimage (the path he created towards his body) in the Abyss, which are then thrown into a Black Hole-like object within it that causes the Earthquake-like vibrations.

…Though it should be noted that this Black Hole is only something seen in the anime, and that in the Light Novels, it appears that the Snake of the Festival’s destruction of the PoP in them directly caused the Mistquake, though for the lack of a visual for the LN version of this, I will be going with the anime’s interpretation of how it was pulled off.

So uh… is Xanadu’s creation actually viable?

cosmology yum

So obviously we gotta talk about how big Xanadu should exactly BE in scope, is it the same size as Earth, or is it a complete copy of the Universe as a whole? Well let’s find out.

·        In the official Funimation description for Season 3, the plan to create Xanadu is described as a “Dubious Plot to bring peace to the Universe”

·        In the manga adaption, when discussing to Yuji about why the Crimson Denizens, Leanne-Shide-as-Lamies makes mention of “of all the innumerable stars” when referring to their worlds

·        Likewise, a planet that is presumably the Crimson Denizen planet in the Crimson World is shown to be around the same size as Earth

·        Xanadu itself is stated to be a “perfect copy” of the human world, which presumably means that everything about the world was copied in Xanadu’s creation

So it should stand to reason that Saiki Reisō (and by virtue of being its opposite, the Tenpajyosei) should be Universal in nature. However, the limitations that Saiki Reisō has (and the fact that Bal Masque as a whole had to do a few preparations to perform it) should prevent Yuji from using this ability in full (in comparison to the Tenpajyosei, which can bypass the sacrifice as long as a large amount of Existence is used)

Verdict

Power & Durability

While the Mistquake and doing the Saiki Reiso are quite impressive and should be things that Yuji should downscale to considering that he uses the power of the Snake of the Festival, alongside being superior to post-season 2 Shana, Byleth has him beat by several magnitudes, as they’re capable of cleaving a mountain in two even before they fused with Sothis, and post-merge, they should be on the same level of power as Sothis, who was capable of flooding the entire planet, which is on the same level as the Mistquake. All in all, Byleth’s higher ends are a bit more viable than whatever Yuji’s highest end should be, considering his strongest ability has a bit too much red tape to it.

Speed

Though in comparison to Power, Yuji actually wins out in terms of being the speedier opponent, as while Byleth. While Byleth has been shown to be capable of dodging spells like Meteor, Yuji can show himself to be faster, such as him being able to defeat Shana, who at that point was capable of dodging the light bullets of the unrestricted Spell Aster, and while he doesn’t directly scale to Eastedge, the latter being able to go toe-to-toe with Ribesal, who he shown superiority to, means that he should be as fast as, if not faster than, Eastedge, whose meteors should be faster than the Meteor spell found in Fodlan. So I think it should be safe to say that Yuji should take speed here.

Arsenal

While both mainly use swords to fight, and the Sword of the Creator is superior to Blutsauger in terms of attacking at a range, Byleth’s weaponry and tools to use against Yuji was rather limited, mostly consisting of other swords that have no real effect, shields that can protect them against certain types of units (and one that can heal them), and other weaponry. In comparison Yuji’s weaponry and tools was actually a bit more varied, with the Dragon’s Tail more or less allowing Yuji a method of attack comparable to the Sword of the Creator’s whip mode, Azure allowing him protection against about any flame-based attack against him, and the Silver allowing him to create an entire army of Tyrant armors he can throw at Byleth, alongside being able to use Blutsauger’s instant damage to bypass any durability Byleth has.

Abilities

What Byleth lacks in a varied arsenal however, they more than make up for it in their abilities, which vastly eclipse anything that Yuji has been shown to be capable of. While their black magic is mostly nullified by Azure (with the odd exception of Thunder), Yuji has no defense against White Magic, one of which can even drain his lifeforce, being able to reduce damage that they take and even nullify any damage they can take altogether. Coupled with Other healing abilities that they can take advantage of, Byleth can nullify any damage they take and easily recover from whatever damage they DO take. Yuji’s strongest ability in comparison to Byleth has a bit too much red tape that can really be use.

Advantages

Byleth

·        Stronger & More Durable

·        MUCH more superior recovery options, including the ability to drain Yuji’s health with Nosferatu and Draining Blow

·        Can potentially nullify about any damage done to them entirely with Sacrosanct

·        Wins the battle of attrition

·        Will maybe get more stuff in Fortune’s Weave

Yuji

·        Faster

·        Better variety of tools to use, and more clear flight ability

·        Can nullify Byleth’s fire magic with Azure

·        Seals can potentially freeze Byleth in place

·        Could bypass Sacrosanct using Blutsauger’s instant damage ability

·        Can trap Byleth in a sphere made of the Silver

Disadvantages

Byleth

·        Slower

·        Inferior variety of tools, and less clear flight ability

·        No real defense against Seals

·        Fire Magic is ineffective due to Azure

·        Cannot defend against Blutsauger’s instant damage

·        Can be trapped in a seal of the Silver

Yuji

·        Weaker & More Fragile (?)

·        How seals function mean he has no defense against Divine Pulse’s time stop function, and has no defense against Divine Pulse’s time reversal

·        Little to no recovery options

·        No Defense against Life-draining attacks such as Nosferatu and Draining Blow

·        Almost all attacks are useless when Sacrosanct is active

·        Ceases to be if all his existence is used up

Results

In spite of his blinding speed and superior tools he had on hand, Yuji just couldn’t do anything to Byleth, and the Fodlan Star had what it took for them to outlast and snuff out Yuji’s existence.

“The Goddess gifted me her power. I was changed by her favor.”

The winner is Byleth.

Afterword

So this one took a long while, huh? It took so long Ogma’s now voiced by Yuji’s second dub VA AND a new game in Fodlan, all in September.

So uh, what’s next?

well, figured that I should finally get to work on the one that was voted for this year, so...
